Hostal Casa Masip

Rent House

• Ezcaray → Puerto de la Cruz de la Demanda (LR-415 & LR-111) – 22km climb. Straight out of bed and into one of the prettiest mountain roads in Spain. Hairpins through beech forest, then above the tree line to 1,800m. Stop at the pass – total silence except the wind and your engine ticking as it cools.
• Cruz de la Demanda → Monasterio de Valvanera (15km). Drop to the 9th-century monastery tucked in a hidden valley. Park the bike under the chestnut trees, light a candle if you’re feeling reflective, and have a coffee with the monks (they love bikers).
• Valvanera → Anguiano → Badarán (35km of pure Rioja Alta joy). Fast, flowing descent past vineyards turning gold in autumn. Quick photo stop at the Anguiano “danza de los zancos” square – you’ll see why.
• Badarán → San Millán de la Cogolla (20km). Ride through endless patchwork vines to the UNESCO twin monasteries – birthplace of written Spanish. The road hugs the hillside like it was drawn by a drunk artist (in a good way).
• Lunch: Ventas de Gormaz – Asador La Chistera (book ahead +34 941 30 40 11). Right on the route, open fire, legendary chuletón (T-bone) aged 40 days, grilled in front of you. Pair it with a bottle of Remelluri or La Rioja Alta. You’ll need a siesta after this one.
• San Millán → Santo Domingo de la Calzada (30km vineyard heaven). Rolling red-earth roads between bodegas. Detour into Haro if you fancy a quick tasting at López de Heredia (the underground cathedral of wine), but save the heavy drinking for tomorrow.
• Santo Domingo → Ezcaray via Puerto de Pradilla (55km mountain finale). Last blast: climb the quiet, perfect LR-316 through pine forest to 1,350m, then a sweeping descent back into Ezcaray as the sun lights up the Sierra de la Demanda behind you.
• Back to Casa Masip. Roll down the main street, straight into the garage, boots off, and upstairs for a cold beer on their terrace while the bike cools below. Total loop: 195km of Rioja perfection.
